How Long Does It Take To Get Dental Implants?

Dental implants replace a missing tooth with an artificial one that looks and functions just like your natural teeth. Because implants become part of your jawbone, there's a multi-step process involved. Dr. Sean W Cullinan shares information about the Glenview dental implant process.Dental Implants

Phase one

Your dentist drills into your jawbone and places an implant into the bone during the first phase of the treatment. Over the next several months, the bone grows around the implant. Because the implant acts as the root of your artificial tooth, it's important that you wait until the implant is fully integrated with your bone before you proceed with the next step. This phase usually lasts three to six months. While you wait for a new tooth, you may prefer to wear a temporary tooth replacement to cover the missing tooth.

If the jawbone isn't thick enough or strong enough to support the implant, you'll need a bone graft before you can begin the implant process. During a bone graft procedure, a graft from a tissue bank or your own jaw is placed in your jawbone. Eventually the graft fuses with the bone, providing a strong base for the implant. If a bone graft is needed, it can add an additional four to 12 months to the process.

Phase two

Your dentist opens the gum covering the implant during the second phase of the process and adds a small post called an abutment. The abutment will support the crown that acts as your artificial tooth. After two to six weeks, you'll be ready for the final stage of the process.

Phase three

During the third phase, your dentist makes an impression of your mouth and sends it to a dental laboratory. The lab uses the impression to make your new crown. When the crown is delivered, your dentist tests it to make sure that it fits your mouth correctly and makes adjustments as necessary.
